Bernard Montgomery came to command the dispirited British 8th Army in Egypt. Under constant pressure from the Axis forces they had to protect the Suez Canal and Egypt, as well as the oil fields of the Middle East. Once the Americans entered the war, their goal became a steady drive, pushing the Germans and Italians back to Tunisia and finally into the sea.
These men wear the glengarry caps of the 51st highland division, the standard 8th army battle helmet and an officer’s peaked cap. These are the standard equipment, canteens ammo pouches and black boots of the desert patrols in North Africa.
