British Commando with grappling hook.
This Commando action uniform is very similar to the look of the officers and men who took part in the Dieppe raids. He could very well be throwing this hook to scale the German fortification walls at Varengeville on the 19th of August 1942 by No. 4 Commando. This fierce struggle to neutralize the coastal battery was successful, however, the ultimate outcome of Operation Jubilee was a failure. The main landings at Dieppe and Puys were thwarted in some measure due to the unfortunate circumstance of running into a German supply convoy of ships while trying to land.
This did not reflect badly on the bravery, or training of the Commando units involved, as they performed well under extremely adverse conditions. These special units would continue to be used for difficult missions throughout the war.
