General Lewis Armistead leads the famous charge with his black hat on his sword. By this point where his Virginia regiment breached the wall his hat has worked it’s way down to the hilt. This moment is just before the Union reserve is thrown in to repulse the assault and the confederates are forced to fall back from cemetery ridge. Armistead would never leave this spot, but his bravery and the bravery of his men has been famous since that day in July.
